China / undergraduate admissions

The hidden first hurdle is the route, not the ranking.

For China, “international applicant” is a precise category, not simply a description of where you go to school. Check it before building your shortlist.

For international applicants aged 16-17 · Checked 14 Oct 2026

This guide is a starting point, not an eligibility decision or an admissions promise. Requirements change by course, qualification and intake. Use the official sources below to check your own application.

01

A foreign passport is not the whole eligibility test

Tsinghua and Peking have their own international undergraduate systems. The easy mistake is to assume that studying abroad, or holding a foreign passport, automatically puts you on the international route.

Nationality history can matter, including parents’ status and previous Chinese nationality. Peking’s published 2026 route sets detailed conditions for some applicants with Chinese-family or former Chinese-resident backgrounds. Tsinghua publishes its own current nationality instructions. Do not substitute a friend’s eligibility for yours.

The practical move: resolve applicant category first, programme second, then documents and tests. If your history is complicated, ask the university a factual question before spending money on an application strategy.

02

“International” does not mean “English-taught”

Tsinghua distinguishes English-taught from Chinese-English-taught programmes. Its current eligibility page says the English-taught route does not require proof of Chinese proficiency, while the Chinese-English route includes HSK 5 with scores above 60 in each component, subject to the stated waiver rules.

Peking’s published 2026 entrance-examination route describes Chinese-medium study and written examinations in Chinese, English and mathematics. That is not the same admissions or classroom experience as choosing an English-taught degree at another institution.

At 16-17, test academic language, not just conversation. Can you follow a lecture, read a technical chapter and write an argument in the teaching language? Choose the programme whose daily work you can genuinely do. Verify the next intake’s rules rather than copying 2026 details forward.

03

What matters at 16-17

Check the expected school-leaving qualification and graduation timing. Review any age or guardian rules for your intended intake instead of assuming that all 17-year-olds can enrol on the same terms.

If the programme needs Chinese, assess your reading, writing and academic vocabulary early. For Tsinghua’s current Chinese-English route, the published requirement includes HSK 5 with more than 60 in each component, subject to its stated waiver rules. English-taught routes have different requirements; read the exact programme instructions.

Keep school records, identity documents and any required translations organised. Where nationality history matters, allow time to obtain supporting evidence rather than leaving it until the application window.

04

Plan the timeline

Before applying: confirm your applicant category, degree, language route and school qualification. Then list required documents, assessments and language results.

During the application window: use the university’s own portal and verify the intake year before submitting. Tsinghua publishes application rounds; Peking’s entrance-examination route has its own application and assessment schedule. Do not reuse last year’s dates.

After applying: monitor the portal and official messages for interviews, tests and document checks. Keep originals available where required. Admission, scholarship and immigration steps are separate processes.

05

Practical moves that help

Read the eligibility page before spending money on tests or application fees. If something is unclear, send the admissions office a short factual question about your actual circumstances.

Choose a language route you can study in, not only qualify for on paper. Look at course materials and the demands of lectures, reading and assessment.

Treat scholarships as separate opportunities with their own rules, not an automatic part of admission. Budget for tuition, accommodation, insurance, travel and living costs. Avoid anyone promising an easier route or guaranteed offer.
